"Star!"

©  Constellations, ed. by Peter Crowther, 2005
--/ cool sf story
--/ idea award

When teens say they want to become "a star" they don't usually mean it in a literal sense. In this story (reminiscent of Gregory Benford and Gordon Eklund's "If The Stars Are Gods" from 1974 Terry Carr's Universe) stars are alive... a teen can turn into one, for example. This weird, preposterous idea gets an appropriately tongue-in-cheek treatment, enough said.

"One Hundred Generations"

(also as by Philip Barshofsky)
© Wonder Stories, Sep 1935
--/ cool sf story
--/ wonder award

Published during the last year of "Wonder Stories" magazine, before it became "Thrilling Wonder Stories" with slightly less wild and woolly fiction inside - this is unashamedly grand (and hopelessly naive) futuristic storytelling. An implausible future, which only could've been imagined at the end of the 30s: human beings evolve into brainy but utterly helpless and sexless creatures (like in the famous Harry Bates "Alas, All Thinking" story), their joy of living largely lost in the sterile and manufactured lifestyle. However, there is a scientist in his fortress in the sky (sane, for a change), who brings back the normal human form, but with one substantial improvement - wings. In the most sensual and beautiful part of the story a bunch of flubbergasted and scared man-geeks catch their first glimpse of a female "angel" and realize that they need to shed their age-old inhibitions... Learning to fly, learning to love again. Carried in the air by a cute & mischievous angel... Memorable & exotic tale.

I can't believe this story has not been reprinted yet. The world comes to an end in a chaotic uprising, and the White House gets raided by an unruly mob, much like the Winter Palace was raided by "liberated workers" and bolsheviks during the 1917 October Revolution in Russia. The uniqueness of the story lies in juxtaposition of such wild cruelty and chaos with delicacy and gentle culture of collectible china, belonging to American Presidents of the Past. This is truly a heart-breaking approach, not dissimilar to Ray Bradbury's indisputable classic "The Smile". Highly Recommended - instills a long time dislike of revolutionary crowds and extreme revolutionary causes, as it surely should.

Very original novella, with wildly imaginative premise (numbers have a certain characteristics beyond "just mathematics", prime numbers especially approach personality-like complexity and are able to affect the flow of alternative time streams - an idea similar to numerology, but combined with speculation on time/space fabric' properties). An interesting Victorian background, lyrical prose and a deceptively quiet mystery plot add to reader's enjoyment of this stand-out and truly original SF story in recent years.

Keith Brooks writes: "...the events in this story are vast and almost entirely off-stage, both outside the scope of the story and the ability of its protagonists to really understand - the story is that insignificant speck, but its events are also central to those affected. It's only a short story, but I think this is probably the most ambitious thing I've written. I think there's a novel here, too..."

Like a colorful blur, a fluid bubble, a Russian "lubok" folk craft, or a dark porous chocolate with all kinds of microscopic "Kinder Surprise" toys in every delectable cavity, like a triple-calorie pudding eaten in a kaleidoscope flurry of road trip landscapes, this one disorients and delights at once. A very powerful fantasy, it maintains a dreamlike state throughout the whole narrative; a stand-out original work of fiction, which has been woefully underrated and sadly lost among other Baen Fantasy "paper-pointless fantasy-less clone-produced barely-alive" opuses. (Not that I have anything against this publisher, you notice...) However, this one rocks, and lucky is the reader who dips into the marvelous murk and swirling passages of this many-faceted book. Amazon readers are also at a loss how classify it. Beauty goes along with Ugliness in the magical quest to face and overcome the tainted side of each protagonist's heart, with a bittersweet ending... I repeat, "ending". Note that it's NOT a series, or a trilogy. Correct me if I'm wrong. But on the other hand it's like "A Series of Unfortunate Events" for adults, with amplified magic and weirdness.

This story is part of the last Burroughs series: "Carson Napier on Venus". Reminded me of Alan Burt Akers "Scorpio" series, with the strange flying machines, fantasy-like aliens and clockwork primitive plot. Of course, Akers (pen name of Kenneth Bulmer) imitated Burroughs, but... Akers did it more engagingly, me thinks. Here, formulaic adventure is not as exotic and lush, as one might expect from Burroughs - however, it does contain one the future staples of space opera: putting our heroes on display (hanging from a hook) in an alien museum, and their subsequent inevitable escape.

It seems the movie is in the works based on "Pirates of Venus" series. Should be a colorful CG experience. By the way, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that there is a term "Sword and Planet" used to describe the whole subgenre in science fiction. Very convenient; I am going to use it now on a ton of pulp and paperback fiction reviews (Robert Moore Williams, Lin Carter, Akers, etc.)
