What a surprise! The novella of completely unknown to me writer jumped to second place, straight outpacing competition - well, it is wacky enough in the most grandiose way, to give you scale and ideas to feed your mind for a week to come. In the future, "hotels" evolve into their own independent empires, architecturally transform themselves into stupendous towers, oppressing and dominating the surrounding lands. It is a story of "break-away" from suffocating environment, comparable to "Against the Fall of Night", only with skewed psychedelic sensibilities. Cool.

It's cool to see this sort of recognition for a writer I feel is of the most underrated sci-fi and fantasy authors of all-time. I'm not sure why Ronald Anthony Cross's work never "broke through" in a big way, but I strongly feel he was an elite talent. While I love "Hotel Mind Slaves" and "The Country Store," my favorite short fiction by Cross is actually from a bit later in his career. "All the Way to Teelee Town" (the cover story in an F&SF Mag from 1990 or 1991) and "Every Trembling Blossom, Every Singing Bird" (Also F&SF, same time period... more magical realism than sci-fi/fantasy, but truly unique and unforgettable) are my favorites of his. I really wish somebody would publish a compilation of his best short fiction... he was a prolific writer and a book-size collection of his best work would be high-quality throughout. Great job with the site, by the way... it's a wonderful resource!
